This invention relates to fabrication of smart contact lens capable of automatically adjusting accommodation. The smart contact lens includes a flexible enclosure compatible for direct contact with a human eye. Within the enclosure, an accommodation actuator is embedded and is controlled by a transparent and flexible electrode disposed on the surface. The electrode material is solvent-based and can be applied through stenciled spraying techniques or stamp coating processes. The materials used to form the electrode could be carbon nanotubes, metal nanowires or conductive polymers. A gaze sensor is disposed within the flexible lens enclosure near its periphery to avoid interference with incident light received closer to the central region of the cornea. By adjusting the accommodation actuator based on the gaze sensor, focusing on objects at near distances can be enhanced.
