Currently, projectors are used to display 3D images. However, projecting holograms requires a well-defined projecting area with certain specific attributes. Further, the projection depends on atmospheric conditions in the vicinity, which limits their use.
A recent patent publication reveals that Disney has developed a system that generates holograms without the projectors. The system uses display screens, preferably LCDs screens to display 2D images. The screens are rotated in order of tens of rotations per second to generate 3D holograms. The screens are transparent, so the 2D images displayed on the screens appear like floating holograms. The system does not require any projecting area and does not get affected by the atmospheric conditions in the vicinity.
The system may be quite a game-changer in the field of holograms and I can’t wait to see the floating holograms in Disneyland.
