On November 9, 1842, George Bruce received a US design patent for printing type faces. This was the first US Design Patent with the patent number USD 1.
George Bruce (July 5, 1781 – July 6, 1866) was an American printer, industrialist and inventor. On 9 November 1842 he was awarded the first design patent (a new form of patent authorized by Act of Congress) for fonts (printing typefaces and borders).
