On December 18, 1900, Cleophas Monjeau filed a patent for an apparatus for purifying water. The three-tiered filter was made up of vegetation on top, sand in the middle and gravel on the bottom. For this invention, Cleophas dMonjeau was honored and made a member of the Parisian Academy of Inventors.
