Armor Dynamics has patented a light weight armor covered with explosives.
As counter-intuitive as it may seem, this patent from Armor Dynamics proposes an armor that is wrapped with explosive material. The idea is to counter an incoming projectile such as a bullet or RPG by creating controlled explosions at the point of impact. The outer side of the armor includes a honeycomb structure made of ceramic tiles. Each hollow portion of the honeycomb structure is filled with a few grams of explosive material. Upon impact from a projectile, tiny explosions are created which act against the kinetic energy of the projectile thus reducing its damaging power.
