Contact Lens With Capacitive Gaze Tracking (US20150362750)

US20150362750

PatentYogi Summary

This invention is a smart contact lens capable of automatically adjusting accommodation for people having difficulty in focusing on objects. It includes gaze detector for identifying the direction or focal distance of a user’s gaze and uses that information to automatically adjust the accommodation. The gaze direction is detected based upon the amount and position of eyelid coverage over a capacitive gaze sensor. As the eyelids cover different portions of the capacitive gaze sensor, this changes its capacitance, which can be measured to determine gaze direction and/or focal distance. The gaze direction is then be used to determine the amount of accommodation to be applied via a see-through accommodation actuator positioned in a central portion of the smart lens. The accommodation actuator includes electro-active optical materials such as liquid crystal cells that vary their refractive index in the presence of an applied electric field.
